Potomac, MD: Shanthi Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underprivileged women and children, will host its 35th Annual Charity Fundraiser on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Cabin John Middle School. The event, running from 4:30 to 8:00 PM, will bring together supporters from the community to raise funds for Shanthi’s mission of uplifting women and children through education, health care, and vocational training.
Established in 1989, Shanthi Inc. has been a vital source of hope and empowerment for marginalized communities in both the U.S. and India. The organization’s mission focuses on breaking down barriers of poverty, inequality, and discrimination to help girls and women achieve their full potential. Through partnerships with local charities in the D.C. Metropolitan area and institutions in Kerala, India, Shanthi has created transformative opportunities for the disadvantaged.
In India, Shanthi supports shelters like ‘Athani’ and ‘Abhayabala,’ providing safety and education for destitute girls. Recent projects, including collaborations with Seva Bharati in Kochi and Ashraya Charitable Trust in Kollam, offer educational and vocational assistance to underprivileged women and differently-abled girls. Locally, the organization has funded programs with Heartly House, Covenant House, and House of Ruth to aid survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
The annual fundraiser is Shanthi’s primary means of generating funds for these initiatives, typically raising $10,000 to $20,000 each year. Tickets are priced at $40 for individuals and $100 for families of four, with free entry for children under 10. Organizers encourage the community to participate in this noble cause, supporting vulnerable women and children in their journey toward empowerment.
